Howe Caverns would be wonderful for kids. There is an elevator into the
caverns, a lit pathway through the cave and at the end, an underground boat
ride. It is also located in a beautiful part of NYS, probably about a 3
hour ride from New York City.
It is just outside of Cobelskill, New York along Interstate 88 in rural
Schoharie County.
It also isn't far from Cooperstown. However, adding Cooperstown would
probably be too much for a day trip.
There are other stops not far from Howe Caverns, such as the Indian museum
and the New York Power Authority visitors center at the Gilboa hydroelectric
pump storage project. Then you can really freak them out by taking them to
nearby Schoharie Reservoir that supplies some of New York City's drinking
water from 120 miles away.
