I've had some very scary classes lately. I just gave zeros to two students who plagiarized assignments--one 98% and the other 44%. The 98% person swears she didn't do it. Students who refuse to read and follow instructions. Etc., etc., etc. I always make a plagiarism post in the first week, along with several otehr information posts about the policies for the class. In my plagiarism post I tell them my rule is "When in doubt, cite it out." In week 3, I give them a treasure hunt. I'm not allowed to require it, but it is useful. Usually, I have 1-2 students out of 40 who do the treasure hunt. This time, I had several students do it. They did well. One of the plagiarism questions was about how to avoid plagiarism. They got it. They even got the concept that you can't use ideas without citation. Usually, students get the words part, but the ideas part is more difficult for them. Two students actually quoted my rule. It's refreshing to see students actually reading and taking responsibility. These are good signs.

Would you consider letting me use it for my high school? It would sure help them, I have no doubt. -- Moni (fmomoon) War does not determine who is right, war determines who is left.--Bertrand Russell

Some of these wouldn't apply to me but, with your permission, I'll change it a bit for my neophytes next year. No problem. Whether or not they participate, they are responsible for everything in the "hunt." "I didn't know," is NOT an excuse. :) "fmomoon" <fmomoon@comcast.net> wrote in message news:Ma-dnZ--KZZHLKHbnZ2dnUVZ_v6tnZ2d@comcast.com... > > <crystal@galt.com> wrote in message > news:133ntf5mkfkvm40@corp.supernews.com... >> I'd be glad to, but I'm not sure it's appropriate since it basically >> covers the rules for my classroom. >> >> -- >> >> Treasure Hunt >> >> >> >> 1.
