The SJAA hotline is available 24 hours/day at (408) 559-1221. This posting contains the current hotline message. For more about SJAA, visit our web site at <http://www.sjaa.net>. WELCOME! to the San Jose Astronomical Association's Calendar Hot Line. Following is a list of all the activities of SJAA. You are invited to any and all of them! Driving directions will be given afterward. Mar. 9 - Friday - Public observing session on the grounds at Houge Park, featuring Saturn and the show objects of the winter sky. The moon is absent. Star party hours: 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm. Also on Mar.9: Mar. 9 - Friday - Special session of our astronomy class. Rob Hawley will discuss the coming Messier Marathon. In the hall at Houge Park, 7:30 pm. Mar.10 - Saturday - Dark-sky weekend. Get away from the city lights, to enjoy the night sky. Sunset 6:10 pm. A 59% moon rises at 1:03 am, giving over 5 hours of dark time, and a nice moon to observe. Mar.11 - Sunday - Summer time begins. At 1 am, advance your clocks to 2 am. This is three weeks earlier than the traditional date. Mar.17 - Dark-Sky weekend at Henry Coe park. This is the annual Messier Marathon, an attempt to see "M" all in a single night. Sunset 7:17 pm. The moon is not visible tonight. Mar.23 - Friday - Our beginner's astronomy class, with our own Akkana Peck, who will tell us all about lunar observing. In the hall at Houge Park, 7:30 pm. Also on Mar.23: Mar.23 - Friday - Public observing session on the grounds at Houge Park, featuring the 31% moon, Saturn, and the show objects of the winter sky. Star party hours: 8:30 to 11:30 pm DIRECTIONS Houge Park is in San Jose, near Campbell and Los Gatos. From Hwy.17, take the Camden Avenue exit. Go east 4/10 mile, and turn right at the light, onto Bascom Avenue. At the next light, turn left onto Woodard Road. At the first stop sign, turn right onto Twilight Drive. Go three blocks, cross Sunrise Drive, then turn left into the park. From Hwy.85, take the Bascom Avenue exit. Go north 0.2 miles, and turn right at the first traffic light, onto White Oaks Road. Run another 0.2 miles to the first stop sign, then turn left onto Twilight Drive. You will now be passing the park. Turn right at the first driveway, into the parking lot. Henry Coe State Park is east of Morgan Hill. From Hwy.101, exit onto East Dunne Avenue. Continue for 12 miles, far past Andersen Reservoir, to the park, atop the ridge. Watch for an old-fashioned cattle guard. Continue another 3/10 mile, and enter the gate parking lot, on the right. There is a $5 entrance fee. Let me repeat that all of our events are open to anyone interested in the celestial science. No reservations needed, we supply telescopes, or bring your own.
